MUSIC CULTURE AND INSTRUMENTS OF SIKKIM


Sikkim is very rich in folk music instruments, but it is very difficult to trace the first musical instrument of the state, because all primitive people all over the world seem to have made music of some sort. 

 So the musical instruments of Sikkim are : 

  •  TALA

The clash cymbal, taal is made up of bell metals i.e. bronze, brass, copper, zinc etc. Each cymbal is connected with a cord which passes through the hole in its center. The pitch of different types of tall vary according to their size, weight and the materials used. 

  • NEPALI SARANGI  
The Nepali Sarangi is a Nepali folk instrument played in Sikkim. It is a chordophone played by bowling. There are different methods of producing notes on Sarangi. Most players play sarangi by pressing the strings slightly with their fingers of the left hand and bowling the strings with right hands. Sarangi is the only instrument which can produce almost all nuances of vocal music of any style, be it dhrupad, khayal, thumri, tappa or bhajan or even ghazals with exact embellishments and intonations.
  • DAMPHU 
Sikkim has many best instruments and Damphu is one of them. It is played in Sikkim by Tamang people. It is an instrument of percussion that means it is played by being struck by a stick.  
  • FLUTE 
The flute is a family of musical instruments in the woodwind group. Unlike woodwind instruments with reeds, a flute is an aero phone or reed less wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air across an opening.
